Often, retirement seems far away to clients. It is the distant goal they are never quite sure they will achieve. We are so used to being in the moment–this day, this week, this month–that we do not really see the years until we look back. We all have a hard time envisioning the distant future. This mentality is very much like training and hiking a long trail.
I recently had the chance to traverse Patagonia, a 100-mile trail many hikers aspire to tread in Torres del Plaine National Park, Chile. Before training and undertaking this trail, Patagonia seemed like a dream. The hours of planning and research made it more real. Then, the day came, and I was there staring in awe at the wide vista before me.
I could not have enjoyed the trail quite the same way if the preparation had not come beforehand. In the moment, I did not spend my time trying to figure out if I had the correct equipment, proper navigation or what to do if I was hurt. Instead, I enjoyed my time there because I was ready for the what-ifs and trusted in my plan.
Retirement is much the same way. The planning and research must come first. The process of pursuing this dream does not have to be daunting. With help and proper investing, it can be exciting and even reassuring. Preparing for that moment allows you to enjoy it, not worry if you will have enough money to meet your expenses, or if a health event will derail you, or if you will have to reenter the work force. Rather, you can enjoy the retirement landscape before you.
If you are dreaming of retirement, whether it be on a trail, a beach or the peace and quiet of your own home, then take the next step to making it a reality. Schedule a retirement review with your advisor and put down milestones to help you work toward reaching that goal.
