We live our lives, wielding our credit and debit cards. The idea of using cash is a bit of an antiquated notion most of the time – except maybe for the next-door neighbor’s lemonade stand. It’s true, there are still occasions when we use cash, but most of us are using cards most of the time.

Sure, thieves can steal your cash, but that’s just what you have on you. If your credit or debit cards get swiped, we’ll have a problem, Houston. They can set up unauthorized purchases. New accounts. The list goes on. So, with convenience comes a little responsibility.

Using your cards safely

There are many small steps that can make a big difference in securing your personal information. When you don’t have your cards with you, make sure they’re somewhere safe. Don’t send your bank or card information over email or text-even if you know and trust that person. Hackers, occasionally, access that information.

We’re also accustomed to giving our credit or debit card number over the phone for all sorts of reasons-which is fine. But only if you’re the one who initiated the call. You never know who can be on the other end of the phone calling you.

Lastly, always check your statements. It takes just a few minutes and if you find an unauthorized purchase or withdrawal – it’ll save you more than time.

Hackers and thieves will go the extra mile to get your information. So, you need to go the extra mile to secure it. Like shredding account statements before recycling them or throwing them in the trash. Or better yet, get whatever statements you can, over email.

You should also shred any unsolicited pre-approved credit card offers that find their way to your mailbox. Thieves can open credit card accounts in your name and wreck your credit score.

And if you do have your cards lost or stolen, call your financial institution immediately. The faster you call, the faster you can shut the account down and prevent more unauthorized purchases. If someone does steal your credit or debit cards remember that you’re not required to pay for any unauthorized purchases that the thief makes-unlike cash.
