1st Source Bank Announces Winners of 2012-2013 Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship
South Bend, IN – 1st Source Bank, administrator of the Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship, announces the winners of the 2012-2013 Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship.
Seven local students were selected as the winners of the scholarship which assists students with their study of the field of music. A total of $25,800 in scholarships is being awarded for the 2012-2013 school year. 2012-2013 winners include:
Robert Franken, son of Robert E. Franken and Catherine McCormick. Robert recently graduated from Penn High School and will attend DePauw University this fall.
Rebecca Gamble, daughter of Dennis and Marcie Gamble, is a graduate of Penn High School and will start her sophomore year at Miami University this fall.
Jacob Pritchard, son of Rebecca Pritchard, is a 2012 graduate of Plymouth High School. He will attend Valparaiso University this fall.
Erika Herman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Herman, is a 2012 graduate. She will attend Saint Mary’s College this fall.
Olivia Hilliard, daughter of Scott and Traci Hilliard, is a recent graduate of Plymouth High School. She will attend Ball State University.
Elizabeth Wolford, daughter of Kevin and Deb Wolford, is a 2012 graduate of Plymouth High School. She will attend Ball State University this fall.
Jerri Moran, daughter of Patrick and Beth Moran, graduated recently from Marian High School. She will attend Valparaiso University this fall.
In addition to the above winners, scholarships have been renewed for five seniors, six juniors and three sophomores. Scholarships may be renewed each year dependent on available funds, the student’s academic record and progress in the development of the student’s talent.
The Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship has also awarded $2,000 to sponsor six summer study students. Three students have been selected from Mishawaka High School as well as two students from Penn High School and one student from John Adams High School.
The Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship was created in 1975 in memory of Hazel Dell Neff Smelser, a local pianist, writer, lecturer choral director, concert singer and guest performer at the Metropolitan Opera. The scholarship was created to assist students who are studying the field of music. Since the Hazel Dell Neff Smelser Scholarship’s inception, over $691,500 in scholarships have been awarded.
Students must be graduates of public and parochial schools in Marshall and St. Joseph counties to apply. Copies of the scholarship applications are sent to the high schools in Marshall and St. Joseph Counties each fall and are available through the music departments. The music directors of each school are asked to nominate their best students in vocal, band and orchestra. Applications can also be obtained by contacting the 1st Source Bank Trust Department at (574) 235-2917. The application deadline is February 15 each year.
