1st Source Announces Winners of the Ernestine M. Raclin Community Leadership Award

1st Source Bank announces the winners of the sixteenth annual Ernestine M. Raclin Community Leadership Awards. Five employees and five community volunteers who embody the spirit, values, energy and leadership of Ernestine M. Raclin, past Chairman of 1st Source Bank and 1st Source Corporation, were selected as 2014 winners of the award.

Ron DeWinter, owner of Hair Crafters Salon in South Bend

Winners of the award were selected by a blue ribbon panel chaired by Carmi Murphy. Other members of the panel include Rex Martin, Chairman, President and CEO, NIBCO, Inc.; Glenn Killoren, Partner at Barnes and Thornburg in Elkhart; Jon Costas, Mayor of Valparaiso; Jim Seitz, 1st Source Bank President; and Chris Murphy, 1st Source Chairman and CEO.
 
Each winner received a $1,000 award, a $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice, and a Globe of Leadership. 
 
1st Source Bank honors this year’s award recipients for their outstanding volunteer leadership in the community.  Winners’ contributions include:
 
Ted Hayes, Marketing Representative with IU Health Starke Hospital
Over the years, Ted’s leadership has impacted a wide range of organizations in Starke County, including the Kiwanis, the library board and the Knox Park Board just to name a few. He also helped start the Boys and Girls Club, now known as the Starke County Youth Club.
 
Rob Huffstodt, Warehouse Manager with Palko Services in Michigan City
For 34 years, Rob has volunteered with the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. He has served in various capacities, including as Fire Chief, and as a leader in training and homeland security training and exercises.
 
Cathie Jessee, Administrative Assistant with Preferred Group Realtors in Knox
Cathie founded JMS Kids to provide clothing and coats for children in need in Starke County. She collects, washes and mends the used items and ensures they go to a family in need.
 
Brian Smith, Co-CEO of Heritage Financial Group in Elkhart
Brian’s leadership roles have included the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, ADEC, and United Way just to name a few. He is currently chair of both the Horizon Education Alliance and the Elkhart County Community Foundation.
 
Ron DeWinter, owner of Hair Crafters in South Bend
Through his involvement with Rotary, Ron has mentored students and created a local job shadow program. He is also active as a board member and life trustee of the Studebaker National Museum.
 
JoElla DePra, 1st Source Trust Officer in Valparaiso
JoElla’s leadership skills have benefitted several groups including the Hebron Chamber of Commerce, Meals on Wheels and Porter County Triad. She is also the current chair of Young Leaders United in Porter County, which offers volunteer, educational and networking opportunities within the community.
 
Rob Patrick, 1st Source Trust Officer in Warsaw
As a participant in the Kosciusko Leadership Academy, Rob helped implement Boomerang Backpacks to provide weekend food resources for needy children. Rob has also served in a leadership capacity with Cardinal Services, the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, Parkview Foundation and Healthier Moms and Babies.
 
Tim Vander Plaats, 1st Source Business Banker in Lafayette
Tim is active with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Lafayette and has made a significant impact as a big brother to a young boy named Victor. He also serves on the board of Family Services, a local counseling service for low income families, and is active with Tippy Connect, an under 40 service organization.
 
Cari Wells, 1st Source Banking Center Manager in Columbia City
Cari has been active with the Whitley County Chamber of Commerce for more than 10 years and currently serves as a board member and Ambassador Chair. She also serves on the board of Junior Achievement and is active with 4-H.
 
Claudia White, 1st Source Client Services Associate in Winamac
Claudia has impacted local families, heading up Kiwanis projects to provide back to school clothing and Christmas gifts to area kids. She has also spent countless hours designing and sewing costumes for the Winamac Community High School Drama Department.
